All prices are in rand. Where a vendor lists in dollars, pounds or euros we convert at R16.53 per US dollar, R21.86 per pound and R18.53 per euro (European Central Bank reference rates, via Frankfurter, 9 OCT 2026).

Amounts written out in the text of this review are at the reference rate of 2 October 2026. The charts and the calculator use the rates above, so a figure can differ by a rand or two.

What Odoo is, in two minutes

Overview, 2:26, published 29 November 2023. From the Odoo channel on YouTube.

A video loads from YouTube only when you press play. The still picture before that comes from YouTube's image servers.

What it is and who it is for

Odoo gives you a library of business apps on scalable cloud infrastructure, including hosting, incremental daily backups on two continents, email integration, security and monitoring. Its three plans are One App Free, Standard and Custom, and every plan includes support and upgrades.

What you get

Standard includes all apps on Odoo Online. Custom adds a choice of Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or on premise hosting, Odoo Studio and AI access, multi company support and an external API.

South African fit

The pricing page does not list South African tax localisation, SARS returns or local banks. Odoo's open model means local partners can build or supply South African modules, so ask them for evidence and a reference customer before relying on VAT or payroll features.

Where it falls short

The low per user price makes the total cost depend on implementation. Support hours are 24 by 5, not seven days, and the page gives no South African support details.

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • One App Free, with unlimited users and hosting included
  • Standard gives all apps at a low per user price, cheaper again on yearly billing
  • Hundreds of apps under one login
  • An open model that suits developers and partners who customise

Limits

  • The page lists no South African tax features
  • Support runs Monday to Friday, not seven days
  • The total cost depends on implementation and your local partner
  • Light users cost extra on Custom

Who it suits

Best for

  • Small businesses that want to start with one free app, such as invoicing or CRM
  • Companies that want many apps under one login at a low per user price
  • Businesses with developers who want to customise the system

Think twice if

  • You need South African tax features confirmed, because the pricing page does not list them
  • You rely on a local partner, because implementation quality varies
  • You want support seven days a week, because support runs Monday to Friday

In short

Excellent value on paper and a good place to start free. Ask a South African partner to demonstrate VAT and bank reconciliation, and budget for implementation.
